In Taoist divination practices, a tortoise shell is often used as a tool for fortune-telling. The shell is seen as a symbol of longevity, wisdom, and stability, and it is believed that by reading the patterns on the shell, one can gain insight into the future.
The process of using a tortoise shell for divination typically involves first cleaning the shell and then burning incense and making offerings to the Taoist deities. The diviner then casts yarrow stalks or coins to determine which of the 64 hexagrams from the I Ching, the ancient Chinese book of divination, to use. The hexagram is then traced onto the tortoise shell, and the diviner interprets the meaning of the hexagram based on the patterns on the shell.
