The White Dragon is said to be the spirit of Minamoto no Yoshitsune, a legendary warrior who committed suicide in Takadachi Castle after being betrayed by Fujiwara no Yasuhira. The print is part of a series called Eight Hundred Heroes of Our Country’s Suikoden, which features historical and fictional characters from Japanese history and literature.
The original is a triptych woodblock print by Japanese Ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Yoshitsuya was created in 1857, and is one of Yoshitsuya's most famous works. It depicts a scene from the Battle of Takadachi, a decisive battle in the Genpei War, which pitted the Minamoto clan against the Taira clan for control of Japan.
