"Le Poulpe Colossal," published in 1801, translates to "The Colossal Octopus" in English. In this book, Pierre Dénys de Montfort described and illustrated what he believed to be a giant octopus. He claimed that the creature had been sighted off the coast of Angola and that it was enormous, with tentacles that could reach lengths of up to 100 feet.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, there was a fascination with sea monsters and mythical marine creatures, and artists often created illustrations and prints based on these legends or accounts from sailors. These depictions were sometimes more imaginative than scientifically accurate.
