Matsya is the first avatar (incarnation) of the Hindu god Vishnu. According to Hindu mythology, Matsya appeared during a great flood that threatened to destroy the world. He took the form of a giant fish and helped the first man, Manu, and the seven sages to escape the flood by guiding them to a safe place. Matsya also rescued the sacred Vedas (the Hindu scriptures) from the demon Hayagriva, who had stolen them from Brahma, the creator of the universe.

In Hinduism, Vishnu is one of the principal deities and is known as the preserver of the universe. He is often depicted with blue skin, four arms, and holding various objects, such as a conch shell, a discus, and a mace. Vishnu is believed to have ten avatars, each of which appears in a different era to restore balance to the universe and protect dharma (righteousness). Matsya is the first of these avatars.
