Founded in 1202, Kennin-ji is considered one of the oldest Zen temples in Kyoto, possibly even the oldest. This artwork can be found on the ceiling of Hoto Hall, a meditation hall, originally painted by Koizumi Junsaku.
Kennin-ji is a head temple of the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism, a school emphasizing meditation, koans, and self-discipline. Kennin-ji is part of the prestigious "Kyoto Gozan," a group of the five most important Zen temples in Kyoto.
