The devas were weakened by a curse from the sage, Durvasa. The asuras (demons), took advantage of this and conquered the three worlds. The gods sought Vishnu's help, who advised them to make a temporary alliance with the demons and churn the ocean of milk. They used Mount Mandara as the churning rod and Vasuki, the king of snakes, as the churning rope. Vishnu told the gods to hold Vasuki's tail and the demons to hold his head. Vishnu took the form of a giant tortoise, or Kurma, and supported the mountain on his back.
As they churned, many things emerged from the ocean: the moon, a wish-fulfilling cow, the goddess of fortune, and various weapons. One weapon was a deadly poison called halahala, which threatened to destroy all creation. Shiva came to the rescue and swallowed the poison, turning his throat blue.
